PPQG Minutes: July 20, 2007
President Marilyn Limbaugh called the meeting to order following a delicious salad-dessert potluck attended by twenty-three people.
Four guests were introduced, including Sylvia Keller who became a member before the end of the meeting.
Treasurer Kalynn Oleson reported that we are on budget.
Program chair Janet Windser reviewed upcoming programs including Barbara Dunsmoor’s handquilting class on Thursday, September 20, followed by Yvonne Porcella’s lecture at our regular meeting the next day. Yvonne is a world class quilter and her lecture is “dynamite”, Janet said. “You’ve got to come. Talk it up. Tell your friends.” October’s meeting will be a comfort quilt workshop, and in November our own Margaret Azpeitia-Taylor will present a lecture on embellishments, ribbons, etc.. Janet and Gail have researched and scheduled programs through 2008 and 2009. For anyone interested, flyers for Asilomar and Quilt in the Garden are available and those workshops are filling up fast.
Marilyn asked for volunteers to chair the Christmas luncheon. Laura Hamilton, Lola DeLongoria and Donna Blum volunteered.
Block-of-the-month drawing was won by Colleen Jackman. Renata Lopez reported that this may be the last block-of-the-month for the year.
Jeri Taylor will be doing the newsletter this month and needs articles by July 24th.
Carol Tackett begged, “Please, please start making things for Festival of the trees.” Things that sold well last year included cheater cloth quilts, placemats, lap robes, wall hangings, table runners, aprons (mother and child were a big hit), purses and bags. Carol plans a small section with items that children might buy as gifts, such as bookmarks and potholders. Pillows did not sell well and are hard to store. Fabric is available in the PPQG closet and fanny basket.
Bag of Stuff projects are due in September. If you are stuck or need advice call Carol Tackett.
Carol handed out viewer comments filled out at the 2007 Challenge Show with several quilts being especially popular and the entire show a big hit. Five or six quilts sold which is quite good considering that so many were not for sale.
Anna Hines reported that for those who wish an additional challenge, another layer is being added to the 2008 Challenge. While our Show at GAC remains foremost, with quilts from beginners as welcome as those from more experienced members, and all requirements remain as previously announced, those who choose to may submit a quilt to be considered for the Ultimate Guild Challenge. Additional requirements for these quilts are that they be between 30 and 60 inches in width and 30 and 60 inches in length, and original in design. The theme, “I Found it in the Library”, remains the same for all entries. Eight quilts will be chosen by a vote of the members and submitted as a group entry to the American Quilter’s Society 2008 Quilt Expo in Nashville, Tennessee in August. On September 21, at 11:45 before our regular meeting, Janet Sears and Lola DeLongoria will present information about what judges look for. This information can help us as we create the quilts and also as we cast our votes for the quilts that will represent the guild. If you wish you may bring a brown bag lunch. The 2008 Challenge Committee now consists of Anna Hines, Laura Hamilton, Polly Dakin, Iris Lorenz-Fife, Janet Sears, and Lola DeLongoria.
Polly Dakin reminded all to be sure comfort quilts are large enough put on a lap and “be a comfort”, at least crib size. When making quilts for adults think about making them feminine or masculine. “A woman will accept almost any quilt, but for men more masculine quilts are needed.”
Lola DeLongioria announced that the AIR quilt is hanging in the stair landing at the Gualala Art Center.
Marilyn Limbaugh reminded all to make a presentation case for your Quilt of Valor. It can be a pillowcase type bag with a drawstring, or made envelope style. She also reminded us to put on a label with a meaningful message. Marilyn has six quilts including three she is making herself, and about eight people at the picnic reported having one in progress. Finished quilts can be delivered to Marilyn or Carol Tackett.
Laura Hamilton asked people to sign up to bring goodies for the next three meetings.
The sign-up sheet for the Ricky Tim’s Super quilt Seminar, January 24 to 26, 2008, was circulated. Those wanting suggestions for places to stay in Livermore can contact Gail Sims.
Anna Hines reported that more suggestions are wanted for new books for the library, as there is money to spend on them. Contact her or Marilyn Alderson with your ideas.
Paula Osborne asked that people get her or Jan Carter any information about guild news. Paula says, “If you can’t write, don’t worry. Just give us the information.” They will write the articles for Sketches, the ICO and our newsletter.
Gail Spencer reported that we have 110 members, before adding new member Sylvia Keller.
Historian Paula Osborne is putting PPQG’s past history on CD’s. If you have anything to add, please contact her.
For Show and Tell, Quilts of Valor by Marilyn Alderson and Polly Dakin were shown, Kalynn Oleson shared a crib quilt for the Festival of the Trees, and Sue Arnold showed quilts made from two patterns she created, Saduko and Super Saduko. The patterns can be seen on the web at TraceyBrookshier.com.
The meeting adjourned for Quilto.
