GUILD GLIMMERS

By Jeri Taylor

What a treat January’s lecture and workshop were!  Jaquetta Nisbet, a world class weaver with an outstanding eye for color and pattern, presented a slide show that left everyone in awe.  The images that she has collected during her extensive travels have been translated into rugs, bags, and wall hangings that are truly breathtaking.  But I think many of us responded most overwhelmingly to her fanciful lizards, crafted with a whimsical eye and a fertile imagination!  This five-foot tall designer packs a powerful wallop.

Judy Bianchi’s workshop on “Interlocking Circles” was both challenging and entertaining.  Participants created a design, translated that design to graph paper, copied it to freezer paper, coded the individual pieces of the design (with a LOT of help from Judy), then cut the pattern and the fabric for the quilt.  We ran out of time before most could begin piecing, but all left with a sense of satisfaction at having learned several new skills.  Judy’s laid-back style kept the whole process relaxed and fun.

PRESIDENT’S CORNER

After years of infancy and growing pains, PPQG has entered a new era of exuberance, both youthful and mature, by no means irrational.  Visitors, teachers and lecturers often surprise us with their comments on our high level of creativity and enthusiasm, while we take it all for granted.  I propose that we NOT take it for granted!  Each of us creates the excitement for all of us.  I thank every one of you for a stimulating and exciting year as your president!

Now—there is just one more thing:  Miriam and I need someone to coordinate the “quilting calendar” for this year’s Art in the Redwoods Raffle Quilt.  Call us ASAP for details on this short-term but important assignment, which makes the entire AIR Raffle Quilt a Mission: Possible.  If you don’t call us, we may call you. Phone Paula @ 785-3844 or Miriam @ 785-2514.

            Happy Valentine’s Day!

FEBRUARY

Friday, February 21

9:30—12:00  - Workshop

12:30  - Gathering and Meeting

Are you ready to move to the next level of your quilting?  Do you feel that creating fresh designs is beyond your scope?  Then February’s workshop is for you.  It will be conducted by Anita Kaplan, and is titled “Loosening Up:  Learn Three Out-of the-Box Ways to Design a Quilt.”  Anita will present techniques that will help jump start your design process.  She will show that unique and creative quilts are within the reach of every quilter.  And as Anita’s own quilts will attest, she is chock full of creativity!  The workshop is currently full, but there is a waiting list and cancellations always occur.  Contact Connie Seale at 785-3545 or by email to express your interest.  Be sure to get the supply list as it is extensive!

We’ll gather as usual for refreshments at 12:30, and there will be a short business meeting at 1:00.  Please join in!

COMING  ATTRACTIONS

The program committee has come up with a terrific idea for the March meeting.    Elizabeth Marrs and Helen Powell, both experienced quilt show judges, will lecture on “How the Judges Judge.”  Here’s the chance to improve the quality of your finishing techniques by learning what really matters to professional judges!

Please bring a quilt or wearable art that you would like critiqued (anonymously) by these two knowledgeable quilters.  You’ll get a top-notch “judging” for free!

In April, Gwen Marston will lecture and conduct a workshop titled “Liberated Block Construction.”  Quilters will learn her new techniques of free piecing original blocks based on traditional ideas.  It’s fun and easy for all skill levels, and each student should be able to complete at least one small quilt top.

Word has it that Ms. Marston has a great sense of humor and that the class is not only instructive, but loads of fun.  It is currently full, but cancellations do happen.  Contact Connie Seale to get on the waiting list.

NEW STEERING COMMITTEE FOR 2003:   Even though your duties do not begin until March, ( we will have a meeting of the "old" and the "new" steering committees sometime before the March Guild meeting), we will  be discussing business during our  February 4 Steering Committee meeting  that may affect your guild responsibility, and you may want to attend this meeting as well.  Please feel free to do so!

PROGRESSIVE   QUILT

Here’s the chance to put to use some of the new skills you’ve picked up since last year!  Participate in our 5th Progressive Quilt Project, which will be completed by the June  meeting.    Beginners as well as experienced quilters are encouraged to participate; all that is necessary is your imagination and your determination to do your best, knowing that others are doing the same for your piece.  The Progressive starts in February with your submission of a center block, and at that meeting you will be taking someone else's home to work on. At each meeting (including June) you will return with the envelope containing the work done the previous weeks.     Each month will have written guidelines for the project, until four quilters will have worked on each project submitted.

Basic Progressive Rules: Submit a center block, a new one, old one previously made, cross stitch, appliqué, something from a class, cheater fabric, you name it, minimum 12"x 12.”  HIDE it in a small brown bag with your name clearly written on the bag.     Use 100% cotton fabrics.  DO NOT share with others what you are submitting; the surprise is part of the fun   not knowing whose square you  are working on!   It is your responsibility to have the project at the meetings, so if you can’t be there, make arrangements to get it delivered, and have the next one picked up for you.    Any questions?   Contact Polly Dakin 884-3474,  Miriam Littlejohn 785-2514, or Marilyn Limbaugh 785-3814.

AIR BOOTH FINAL REPORT

The AIR booth was an unqualified success, earning more than $3,600 this year. This represents a gain of almost $900 above our prior year sales. Special thanks to the many members who created the varied and beautiful items that sold so well.  All of these items were donated free of expense so the profits really were able to support the PPQ Guild's events and programs. The summer AIR booth is the Guild's ONLY fundraiser and plays a strategic part in balancing our budget each year.

Thank you all for your support in making it such a wonderful success. Many hands make light work.

CALLING ALL QUILTS!

Several of you have generously lent your quilts to be hung at the Resource Center (where hospice, CRC, and mental health, among others, meet).  I've been the lucky one who hears the thanks expressed for our help in turning these stark rooms into pleasant meeting places. In fact the large meeting room has been dubbed the "quilt room."  It's now time to rotate the quilts, returning those now hanging to their owners and putting up some new ones.  If you have a wall quilt that you could spare for three or four months and would like to have it seen and admired by the community, please call or email me.  As soon as I've heard from four or five of you, I'll collect your quilts, hang them, and return the ones now hanging to their homes.

This is an excellent way to get our quilts "out there" for others to enjoy.  If you haven't shown your work before and entering a "show" scares you, this is an easy way to start.  I guarantee you will be appreciated.  Call me at 785-3523 or email me at jansears@mcn.org and I'll arrange to pick up your quilt.    Thanks, Janet Sears
