ÒLayered ImageryÓ Workshop

January 19-20

Portland-based Quilt Artist Jeanette DeNicolis Meyer is our speaker and teacher for JanuaryÕs guild meeting and workshop.  Her classes on Wednesday

and Thursday, January 19-20, feature techniques for producing art quilts of unusual depth.  Creating layers of texture through appliquŽ, fusing, image transfer and stitchery helps quilters turn fabric and thread into art. Meyer Ôs teaching position at the Oregon School of Arts and Crafts attests to her high professional status, and her primary goal is to free the artist in each student.  Her own work includes quilts which are abstract, bold, energetic, and geometricÑor notÑintriguing and mystical.

She will share her extraordinary artistic journey with us during our Guild meeting Friday, January 21.  Social time begins at 12:30, the business meeting at 1:00pm, followed by the program.  Take a look at Jeanette DeNicolis MeyerÕs quilts on her website at www.jdmeyer.com, and prepare to be inspired by this extraordinary artist.  It is no wonder that her teaching schedule ranges from New York to New Zealand. What IS wonderful is that we have enticed her to Gualala to help us grow as quilters, and to find our own Òartist withinÓ.

Workshop Fee: $165.  Some quilting experience recommended.  Call Laurie Mueller to enroll:  785-9533 and send your check to PO Box 314, TSR 95497

Communications Takeover!

Bonnie Toy will be taking over as Electronic Communications Diva effective January 1st, as I get ready to transition back to the Bay Area. Bonnie has graciously agreed to take on the whole enchillada Ñ not only the Guild web site, but the email list, the roster and the newsletter mailing labels. A hundred million thank-yous to Bonnie.

One thing IÕve tried to do as a logical, though unofficial, extension of my Diva-hood has been to photograph major Guild events such as the Challenge show, progressive quilts, workshops with visiting instructors, field trips and so on, and share them via the web site. Carol Tackett, Barb McNulty and others have also contributed pictures, for which IÕm very grateful. Since I wonÕt be on the scene for many Guild activities (yes, I know: sob) later on in the year, please think about bringing your camera and documenting some of them. (Digital images are best, either jpegs or scanned.) Many people have told me how much they appreciate being able to display their quilts, online, to friends and relatives who couldnÕt possibly attend our exhibits in person. Well-known quilting teachers have also enjoyed seeing photos of their workshops and the results of our efforts there.

Please join me in welcoming Bonnie and thanking her once more for adding the job of Electronic Communications Diva to her already full and active schedule.

A Special Note from our President

Carpe Diem Ð Support your Guild

Seize the moment! Take a chance! Try something different in the new year! Our guild depends on the many fantastic members who give so selflessly of their time, energy and expertise. Without them, we would not have our wonderful speakers programs, workshops, special projects, challenge shows, quilting trips and retreats. We welcome new members on the committees. New members bring fresh insights and the opportunity to develop new projects. Volunteering in the PPQG Guild provides a great opportunity to meet and work with the many talented and creative women in our community. Guild members may be calling to ask for your support Ð please say ÒYesÓ. Wishing all of you a Happy and Joyful New Year.

Block of the Month Begins

I hope you all saw the progressive quilts at the December luncheon.  They get better every time, donÕt they?  We are an amazing group of creative quilters.  Now that the progressives are done, or at least back to their owners, itÕs time for another project.  So letÕs move on to another block-of-the-month series.  Bev Sloane and Janet Sears will introduce a block at the January meeting.  You will then have until the March meeting to complete and turn in your blocks.  Every block you make entitles you to one chance at the drawing for all the blocks at the March meeting.  Pick up your instructions at the January meeting, or get in touch with Bev or Janet.

If you have a completed block-of-the-month quilt, bring it for show and tell in January.  Nothing inspires new work like admiring someoneÕs completed project!

A Wet Thank You!

The WET PAINT committee is delighted with the response to our first Òbest of the yearÓ show.  We hope you agree the result is worth the effort.

I personally want to thank those of you who responded to my pleas, by submitting your best work for 2004.   Of the 10 textiles that were entered (weavings and quilts) seven were juried into the show.

We plan to hold WET PAINT again next year Ñ and I hope everyone who makes a quilt for the Challenge, or for Arts in the Redwoods, will consider hanging on to it until December.

Guild Glimmers

by Jackie Gardener

I always feel a bit odd participating in the Guild fabric games during the holidays, since I am not a quilter, and barely capable of hemming a pair of pants. But I do see many compelling similarities between the luscious fabric designs and patterns and those in my medium of choice -paper- during the delightful holiday party we have each year. And this year was no exception, as I was able to parlay my own desires for stripes of all kinds into a package of fabrics that fortunately *someone else* has to make into something coherent!

The food prepared by all of our members was delicious and colorful and hearty. What great cooks we are! Perhaps there should be a challenge for doing recipe quilts sometime. It was a beautiful and tasty array.

Anita Kaplan once again outdid herself in devising a game of *Quilto* for us to play to win our fat quarters. Fevers escalated as the quilting questions were tossed out one at a time, and whispered answers were heard at all the tables as each of us tried to be the first to cover our cards.

Everyone pitched in to clean up and tear down the room, and some of us bought the beautiful table flowers to take home to adorn our own tables. Thank you to Anita and her helpers for putting together a delightful party. I hope we all enjoyed a great holiday and look forward to making something beautiful from all those striped fabrics in the new year.
