“Finish Line”

September revealed part five of the Mystery Quilt to complete the top. Just five easy hours, one hour each month and now the quilt top is ready to sandwich and quilt. Additional finishing tips will be shared each month until Dec. 2005. If you have fallen a bit behind, it’s not too late to sit down and have some fun with that beautiful fabric you purchased. Mystery Quilt tops will be displayed at the Holiday Luncheon. If you need any of the instructions or help, please call Diane at 884-4342 or Donna at 785-3625. We are happy to answer your questions any time.

President’s Message –

              “Katrina” Hit Us All!

All of us were touched by the worst storm in American history and when Carol Tackett received the call from Houston International to provide a tangible expression of caring, she , in turn, called on all of us.  The response to her call for help was tremendous. Carol’s list of participants in the Hurricane Relief Comfort America Workshop includes:

The call for quilters was answered by Katy Horn, Laura Hamilton, Elizabeth Beckett, Lola DeLongoria, Elizabeth Langdon, Cynthia Snowden, Anita Green, Jeri Taylor, Lynne Atkins, Bonnie Morgan, Dori Hudson, Claire McPherson, Jo Dillon, Marilyn Limbaugh, Carol Erkela, Janet Sears, Mary Hunter, Joyce Gaudet, Paula Sullivan, Jolley Thomas, Sue Lease, Jane Head, Jan Carter, Barbara McNulty, Anita Kaplan, Carol Tackett, Polly Dakin, Suzy Bates and Paula Osborne.  Those who contributed quilts were Gail Sims, Miriam Littlejohn, Iris Lorenz-Fife, Bette Covington, Kathye Hitt, Ruth Hayflick, Colleen Jackman, Sharon Malakowski and Barbara Dunsmore.

At the last count, I have heard of over 70 quilts donated to the storm victims.  Wow!  Our Vice-President Carol Tackett deserves a  huge thanks for the many hours she put in to make our involvement in the Workshop  a success!

I am so proud to be part of such a caring group!  All of you are very special!

GUILD GLIMMERS

By Jeri Taylor

Cara Gulati brought humor, energy, and two trunks of quilts to her lecture to Septem-ber’s guild meeting.  A convert from the gar-ment industry, Gulati brought her dressmaking skills to the quilt world and has become a noted teacher and art quilter.

Her definition of an “art quilt:”  “If it has a sleeve.”  She took some of the mystique out of designing by having the audience play a little game.  Each member had a piece of paper on which was drawn the outline of a pieced quilt.  One person in each row gathered these, ripped them in half, and re-distributed them.  Voila!  Instant art quilts!  Gulati then demon-strated the same technique with fabric, show-ing large squares which she had cut in half, then in half again, re-arranged, and came up with fetching and unexpected designs.

For those of us with too many UFOs, she offered redemption.  “The quilt’s done when it’s done,” she pronounced.  She showed many quilt tops that had never been sandwiched or quilted.  “They’re done,” she quipped.  If she loses inter-est or just doesn’t like what she’s accomplished, she feels no compunction about simply aban-doning them.  Wow – no more UFOs!

Her quilts are marked by bright, bold colors and dizzying design.  They mirrored per-fectly her energy and enthusiasm.

Hurricane Help

According to Polly Dakin, our second batch of 17 comfort quilts went out the week of September 19th to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. This group went to Hancock's of Paducah, which will distribute them in Missis-sippi.  Houston was overloaded and didn't need any more.

Thanks to all who helped on this special project. And special thanks to Carol Tackett for jumping in and getting it underway without delay!
