Comfort Quilt Workshop

Friday, June 16th

10am - 4pm

Karen Combs’ class has been cancelled due to lack of participation.  In it’s place, we will have a Comfort Quilt Workshop. Polly is short on Comfort Quilts, and needs some specifically for men. Please come and help out.

There’s  labels, batting, some fabric, ironing boards and lunch will be provided by Lola & Laura! Aren’t they great? We have given 15 quilts away to local folk since the first of the year, an all time high for us.

Guild Glimmers

by Cynthia Daniels

When one sees the quilts of Judy Mathieson in person, there is no question as to why she is a world-renowned quilter, instructor and artist.  She is famous for her Mariner’s Compass Quilts and has now written three books on this particular quilting design.  However, the Mariner’s Compass quilts are not the only designs Judy has developed and perfected.

Eleven Guild members took Judy’s class on Shadowed Circles on Thursday, May 18.  It was a fascinating and fun class, which included creating depth and dimension in a quilt.  The Shadowed Circles is a basically simple design that can morph into a masterpiece of dimension, illusion and ethnic presentation.  Judy is an excellent teacher, with a wonderful calmness and patience, which encouraged creativity and excitement in her students.  She also taught the class some unusual and effective techniques in the use of freezer paper and appliqué.  Practically everyone in the class finished the day with their projects well on the way to completion.  The class was definitely time well spent!

On Friday, Judy lectured and gave a slide presentation for the Guild meeting.  Her evolution as a quilter was an interesting one.  She tended to become fascinated with a shape or form (e.g., circles, stars, shadows, etc.) and then she would develop ways to incorporate them into a quilt.  She would work on a theme for a while, then tire of it, and move on to another challenge.  She brought several magnificent quilts for us Piecemakers to admire.

One of her current fascinations is incorporating dogs (and some cats) into quilts.  She and her husband raise and train Border Collies for shepherding.  Consequently, we were able to see some delightful quilts of her dogs, as well as some playful creations including multiple scenes.

An interesting part of Judy’s lecture included a discussion on what inspires a quilter to create a quilt.  One such inspiration for Judy came from the floor of the Bristol Cathedral in Bristol, England, and this is now one of Judy’s more famous quilts, Bristol Stars.

Many thanks to Judy Mathieson for being such an inspiration.

News from the Northwest

Reva Basch reports from Portland that one of her quilts was juried in to the annual student show at the Oregon College of Arts and Crafts. It was on display at OCAC’s Hoffman Gallery during April. Reva also garnered a 3rd place ribbon in the “Innovative” category of the Northwest Quilters 2006 show. Honesty compels her to admit that there were only six entries in that category...but we all know how innovative and talented she is! Congrats to Reva!
