GUILD GLIMMERS

What is it about California coastal communities that breeds such amazing artists?  Rosemary Eichorn, from the quaint little town of Soquel (near Santa Cruz), provided a fascinating lecture and fashion show of her magnificent wearable art and the use of collage.  The fashions included various styles of tunics, vests, and jackets.  Much of her inspiration for these amazing wearable masterpieces comes from her garden — a rich mixture of nature, man, animal, and whimsy!

Rosemary's two-day Talisman Tunic workshop was jam-packed with tips, demonstrations of new and fascinating techniques for the collages, decorative stitching, and decorative methods (e.g., foiling, piping, triangular facings, shaped edges, shielded pockets, etc.

Walking through the class, you could see the inspiration Rosemary imparted to everyone.  Everyone in the workshop learned a great deal and it was evident in the beautiful artwork they created.  Some attendees made the full-length tunic, while others made shorter versions, vests, wall hangings, and table runners.  Once these are all finished, the Guild should have a show!

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

I hope that all of you had a wonderful summer and are ready to face some new challenges this fall.  The first challenge is to help Marilyn Limbaugh and your president make items for the GAC Festival of the Trees during the Thanksgiving weekend.  We are in need of placemats and napkins, pillows, tree skirts, small wall hangings, patchwork toys, advent calendars and any other wonderful gift ideas celebrating our lives as quilters.

This is a wonderful opportunity to do fundraising for our guild.

I have also issued another President's Challenge for October for the ATC (Artist Trading Cards).  It is slightly different this time.  Bring cards in multiples of two and you will be able to choose one to take home and the others will be for sale at the Festival of the Trees.  We will still charge $5.00 for any number of cards.  The directions are on our website.  Or call me!

         Thank you all.

DON'T MISS THIS ONE!

We have twenty-five dedicated quilters signed up for the 2007 retreat so far.  There are a few spaces left — there are a couple of cottages for doubles and a few singles left.  Ask someone who's been there!  You won't want to miss this opportunity to get a project (or two) done without the distractions of daily life, with great meals served to you, and with the camaraderie of our own warm and wonderful quilters.  And at the end of a long day of sewing, you can unwind with a glass of wine or take a long, leisurely soak in the amazing waters of the Vichy Springs!  How could it be better?

The retreat dates are January 29—February 1, 2007.  Email Anita, anita@anitakaplan.com if you would like to make a reservation.  Costs vary according to accommodations; check the PPQG website, pacificpiecemakers.org.

         Be there or be square!

OCTOBER

Guild Meeting
October20
12:30 p.m.
Gualala Arts

World-class quilter and teacher Mary Mashuta will present a unique quilt design class on October 20, 9:00 a.m.—noon.  Titled "Creating Quilting Designs with Contact and Freezer Papers for Machine Quilting with the Walking Foot," the workshop will help you to evaluate and adapt commercial templates.  No more marking lines that don't come out!  See how easy it is to paper cut your own block and border designs.  No sewing machine is required.

The workshop will precede the regular Guild meeting.  At the meeting, Mary will present a lecture titled ̉Color:  Too Much Is Not Enough!

Cost of the workshop is $40 — a real bargain!  Contact Janet Windsor at 785-9521 or email her at jwindsoh@yahoo.com.

         See you there!

COMING IN NOVEMBER

Our own Iris Lorenz-Fife will teach "No-Math Drafting and Tessalations for Quilters," Wednesday and Thursday, November 15 and 16 from 10:00—4:00.  This class is back by popular demand!  Iris will take away all your qualms about drafting your own quilt designs.  It's easy, it's painless, and it's fascinating.  You'll learn to design your own quilt blocks — without using math.  Honest!  Without measuring, you will learn how to create a quilt block.  To repeat:  you will not have to use math or fractions.

The second day builds on those skills to create a tessalated quilt pattern which you can turn into your own custom-designed quilt.

The cost of the workshop is $60.  Contact Janet Windsor to register.

Happy Birthday

A THANK YOU

Many of you are aware of the 50th anniversary celebration for Surf Super last months.  It was quite a festive occasion, with food, music, and raffle items.  Anita Kaplan organized a group of seventeen quilters and put together a stunning quilt based on Ruth McDowell's vegetable patterns.  Many of you saw it hanging in the Surf and coveted it.

The quilt and other raffle items raised over $10,000 for the Action Network and the South Coast Seniors Meals Program.  Following is a thank you from Janet Kukulinsky of the Action Network:

Dearest Steve and the entire Surf Supermarket Team:  Employees, Vendors & Partners; Community Members who purchased Raffle Tickets & shop at Surf Supermarket; and Action Network and South Coast Seniors Board Members, Staff and Volunteers who helped with the Celebration:

Each of you is a "Hero" in our community!  I'm sending this email of thanks on behalf of  the local youth and seniors who will benefit from the services the proceeds will support.

Our local youth and seniors are the true winners from the 50th Anniversary Celebration.  Action Network After School Enrichment Program and the South Coast Seniors Meals Program each received $5,542.50 from the proceeds of the Raffle.

Action Network After School Enrichment program, under the direction of Paula Power, plans to use the funding toward the purchase of laptop computers, digital cameras and software needed to get two new exciting classes started — Lego Robotics and Literacy through Photography.  For teaching purposes it is important that all the computers and cameras be exactly the same.  (Used laptops and cameras are still welcome donations for student use for other classes and for use at home.)

Again, thank you from the bottom of my heart for this VERY generous donation!  WOW!
